In the late 1970s and early 1980s, he was Director of CDC during both the Carter administration and into the first part of the Reagan administration, when AIDS emerged. And in the late 1990s and 2000s he worked with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to expand its global health mission, which has transformed the global fight against many diseases of poverty. In recognition of his achievements in international public health, President Obama awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012.</text>

                <text>Dr. Jeffrey Koplan served as the Director of the Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion from 1989 to 1994, and then as the Director of CDC from 1998 to 2002. This interview focuses on the early years of the AIDS epidemic, beginning in June 1981 with the publication of the first Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report [MMWR] on the five cases of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia among homosexual men. Dr. Koplan served in several critical roles during those early years, first as chair of the Public Health Service AIDS Task Force convened by the Assistant Secretary for Health, [Dr. Edward N.] Ed Brandt, in 1983, and then as chair of several pivotal meetings regarding the transmission of AIDS through blood and blood products.</text>
