Unsung Heroes
A recording of a panel by CDC staff in 1979 to commemorate the attainment of the goal of "Zero Smallpox". With an introduction by Bill Foege, panel members recount the "unsung heroes" of the Smallpox Eradication Program in West Africa, Brazil, and Southeast Asia. Don Hopkins, Mike Lane, Don Millar, Gordon Robbins, Bob Baldwin, Leo Morris, Don Francis, Stan Music, and Jason Weisfeld each share personal stories about the impact of their local counterparts, cultural traditions, the French Endemic Disease Service, the role of smallpox god worship, the individuals who suffered from smallpox, and the exceptional individuals who rose to the occasion to eradicate the disease and without whom the goal of "Zero Smallpox" would not have been realized.

HOPKINS: GUINEA WORM UPDATE
Guinea Worm Eradication
Don Hopkins, Vice President, Health Programs for the Carter Center is introduced by Stan Foster, MD, MPH. His talk relates to the progress made in the eradication of dracunculiasis dracunculosis, or guinea worm disease. African countries and India, Pakistan, and Yemen [or 20 countries in Africa and Asia] were once all endemic, but now it has been narrowed down to Southern Sudan, Northern Ghana, Eastern Mali, Western Ethiopia and Pakistan. Pakistan was the first country to stop transmission. The basic operating principle is to identify cases and make sure they don't continue to transmit the disease.
